a guide for job seekers
This booklet, packed with activities, is designed mainly for ethnic minority job seekers who are finding it difficult to get started in their careers, although much of the advice applies to anyone looking for their ideal type of job.
The kit reveals what employers expect from job seekers and how they can present themselves effectively during the selection process.
We stress the importance of having ambitious but realistic goals. Readers will find out how to overcome negative attitudes, stereotypes and prejudice in order to get their preferred jobs. They will learn how to make an impact on employers and get the positive response they want.

Benefit from diversity
-
a guide for employers
This guide will help employers who want to learn more about the benefits of diversity and about improving their employment practices. It gives reasons why they should try to attract more ethnic minority employees and why they should aim to become 'employers of choice' within the communities that provide their workforce and customer base.
The kit suggests how employers might tackle negative attitudes and discrimination, improve recruitment, selection and promotion practices, build better links with local ethnic minority communities and implement an effective equality and diversity policy for business success.

Promoting diversity in employment
-
a guide for employment intermediaries
This toolkit is for employment intermediaries - people who play key roles in bringing together employers and job seekers. This includes careers advisers, job centre staff and those working on special initiatives who help particular groups, such as disadvantaged young people. In particular, it highlights the many ways in which intermediaries can help employers as well as job applicants from ethnic minority communities. It complements How to get the job you deserve and Benefit from diversity, which are for job seekers and employers.
Promoting diversity in employment identifies actions which intermediaries can take and summarises the main issues in the other kits.
This toolkit is only available as part of a set of all three toolkits.

Researching the toolkits
These toolkits are based on our research with employers, intermediaries and members of ethnic minority communities in Bradford, UK.
Employers who took part represent major public and private sector organisations, as well as small and medium sized companies in a wide variety of sectors. The intermediaries included senior managers and their colleagues working in strategic roles or in the direct delivery of services to clients. The job seekers were mainly from Bangladeshi, Pakistani, African and African-Caribbean communities in Bradford.
